As per the itinerary of Leh Ladakh tour, we started our journey to the Nubra Valley from our hotel at Leh around 8 AM. Our first stoppage was at Khardung La (locally it is pronounced as “Khardong La” or “Khardzong La”) which is around 40Kms from Leh via Phyang. There could be heavy traffic on this route on certain time slots of the day but as we started off early morning, managed to reach Khardung La Pass on time. The road via Phyang is pretty rough. At Khardung La we took some photos with the signboard at the summit “Khardung La, 18380ft – Highest Motorable Road in the world” also some of the local people claims this to be acknowledged by Guinness Book of Record as well. Though the truth is still debateable as I have read about the height claims, measurement was done by old instruments, there is a major difference in measurements at with latest technology which is roughly around 17500 ft only, way less than the other motorable roads of the world. Anyhow all these technicalities seem completely non-affecting to us and other tourists who were keen to click the famous photo pose, pointing at the highest motorable road sign board. We had a brief halt of around half an hour there visiting Khardung la memorial, Rinchen cafeteria (claims to be highest cafeteria in the world) and Khardung la souvenir shop.

From there we drove to towards Khardung Village which is around 30 kms, it’s a small village though there are few restaurants for a quick coffee break also the picturesque surrounding gives an excellent backdrop for photography. Then from Khalasar to Diskit in Nubra valley our Leh Ladakh tour’s checkpoint is around 25 kms, we reached there almost on time. Around 2.30 PM we checked in at our hotel at Diskit. As per schedule we had our lunch there and went in our rooms for a quick nap before heading to evening walk in Nubra valley.
