Next day morning we packed our bags and headed towards Leh Ladakh from Manali at 9 AM in the morning. The total distance between the Manali and Leh Ladakh is around 490 Kms. Though this distance can be covered up in a single day while driving on plains but on the hilly area with very rough roads and traffic condition should be covered in minimum two days, as for the day one we planned to take a night halt in Himachal Pradesh tourism resort at Jispa which is around 140 Kms from Manali. The road route plan was from Manali – Rohtang Pass – Gramphu – Kokhsar- Tandi – Keylong – Jispa – Darcha – Zingzingbar – Baralacha La – Bharatpur – Sarchu (state border) – Gata Loops – Nakee La – Lachulung La – Pang – More Plains – Tanglang La – Gya – Upshi – Karu – Leh. From Manali to Rohtang it’s the steady climb with some of the sharp turns on the road. Generally the route is occupied with heavy traffic during peak tourist season resulting in many hours long jam, but luckily in our case it wasn’t that bad but still we got stuck in the traffic twice for an hour or more. At around 1 PM we reached Rohtang Pass, which is a famous tourist spot and one can enjoy various snow sports like snowboarding, skiing, and other related adventure activities.
After an hour halt at Rohtang we headed back to highway to Manali – Leh highway for our night halt at Jispa. On the way we had a small halt at Kokhskar for police check and took some extra fuel in containers from Tandi which is the last petrol pump before Upshi for almost 345 km. From Tandi to Keylong the road is in bit better condition. Soon we arrived to Keylong, it was late evening about to get dark soon. As you climb on the altitude you will observe that vegetations or overall greenery in the surroundings starts lessening, it is a sign of moving towards Tibetan Plateau. At around 8 PM we reached Jispa hotel resort for the night halt. It was a tiring journey so we all dozed off as soon as we arrived, I didn’t even took dinner properly that night, was so tired of sitting in the car all the way serpent shaped roads uphill, though I knew it was just a beginning of our adventure.
