Leh Ladakh Tour – My Travel Journey (14)

Around 4 PM, as per schedule of our Leh Ladakh tour itinerary we went out explore the surroundings. Diskit village is famous for the Diskit monastery which is situated on a hill near Shyok River. Apart from the Diskit monastery the lush green field around Diskit Village and truly enticing scenic beauty attracts lot of tourism during this time of the year. There are several trekking paths or sites also as per our bird watching touring plan we could spot some bird species like red fronted serin, white wagtail, citrine wagtail, white browed tit warbler, black redstart and chukar partridge etc. Diskit is the main centre point of Nubra valley all major government offices and other facilities are available here. We took a local guy with us who guided us through a trekking path of around 30 minutes to a traditional Ladakhi House which was situated at the outskirts of Diskit.

These houses are made from wood and mud bricks which are baked under the sun for days before usage. The wood from poplar tree is used to create the basic structure, further the house is plastered with white clay which is sourced locally. This overall strengthens the house and provides soothing effect the moment you enter any room. Some of these houses in the nearby areas of Leh are owned by hotels transformed into a full-fledged resort format i.e. available for rent accommodation for tourist with all upgraded facilities of traditional furniture, large courtyard, modern washrooms, sun terraces etc. It was around 6.30 PM so we trekked back to our hotel in main Diskit area, on our way back there wasn’t much to see as it was all dark but the twinkling lights in the houses or shops of Diskit and the monastery view was second to none. We had our dinner in the hotel itself and went in to sleep bit early as tomorrow we would be back in Nubra valley for some more excursion.

Leh Ladakh Tour – My Travel Journey (13)

As per the itinerary of Leh Ladakh tour, we started our journey to the Nubra Valley from our hotel at Leh around 8 AM. Our first stoppage was at Khardung La (locally it is pronounced as “Khardong La” or “Khardzong La”) which is around 40Kms from Leh via Phyang. There could be heavy traffic on this route on certain time slots of the day but as we started off early morning, managed to reach Khardung La Pass on time. The road via Phyang is pretty rough. At Khardung La we took some photos with the signboard at the summit “Khardung La, 18380ft – Highest Motorable Road in the world” also some of the local people claims this to be acknowledged by Guinness Book of Record as well. Though the truth is still debateable as I have read about the height claims, measurement was done by old instruments, there is a major difference in measurements at with latest technology which is roughly around 17500 ft only, way less than the other motorable roads of the world. Anyhow all these technicalities seem completely non-affecting to us and other tourists who were keen to click the famous photo pose, pointing at the highest motorable road sign board. We had a brief halt of around half an hour there visiting Khardung la memorial, Rinchen cafeteria (claims to be highest cafeteria in the world) and Khardung la souvenir shop.

From there we drove to towards Khardung Village which is around 30 kms, it’s a small village though there are few restaurants for a quick coffee break also the picturesque surrounding gives an excellent backdrop for photography. Then from Khalasar to Diskit in Nubra valley our Leh Ladakh tour’s checkpoint is around 25 kms, we reached there almost on time. Around 2.30 PM we checked in at our hotel at Diskit. As per schedule we had our lunch there and went in our rooms for a quick nap before heading to evening walk in Nubra valley.
